Home Sweet East Nashville

For the last few months I’ve been working on getting settled into my “new to me” 1930 something stone cottage over in East Nashville.

I went here, there and everywhere around town looking for things to make it feel like home and thought I’d share some of them with you! And there are lots of links to click on… just hover over the name of the shop where I found the goodie!

This bench was a cool find at the October City Farmhouse Pop Up. 2Storeys Antiques came to the pop up all the way from Columbia, Tennessee with it. The seat is made out of an old wagon with refurbished legs. The water can and pillow are also City Farmhouse Pop Up finds!

My entry way table… another City Farmhouse Pop Up steal! The bucket holding the pine cones something I snagged at Christmas Village.

My living room could not get any cozier if it tried.

built ins bird house

The built ins were the hardest thing to complete. I had lots of help from the City Farmhouse Pop Up once again… the bird house… the lantern… that beautiful tin and Nashville’s own Paddywax candles!

My dining room table is my new prized possession. It was made beautifully by Southern Charm Farmhouse Furniture (formerly East Nashville Farmhouse Furniture). McKenzie Child’s is from Vintage Jolie in downtown Franklin! dining roomIMG_0060 IMG_0058

My very first housewarming gift was glasses from East Nashville’s Barista Parlor from my sweet realtor.

And to the office! I found my desk at the always amazing Nashville Flea Market at the fairgrounds.

I moved pretty fast getting everything decorated but I didn’t feel like my home was truly complete until I got my hands on these two signs from House of Belonging.

In my office: “Today is a good day for a good day.”

And leading to my bedroom: Proverbs 4:23 “above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” IMG_0064

Just a little slice of Heaven right there…

IMG_0066 IMG_0067

I got a big new comfy bed for my new room and made it comfy with Carolyn Westbrook bedding and lamp from… you guessed it… the City Farmhouse Pop Up! And my nightstand is another flea market find.

I was desperately needing to block out light from one of my windows but hated the look of black out curtains. My mom and I found these amazing doors at Peacock Lane in Nolensville and she turned them into sliding window treatment!

And the finishing touch… a beautiful painting by local artist Heather Thompson!

Another City Farmhouse Pop Up right there… the next one is in June and obviously I can’t wait!

13.1: Training for Nashville’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Half Marathon

Man do I have way too many New Years resolutions but there is one I am taking more seriously than ever before. I’m running my first half marathon through the heart of Nashville!

I’ve vey never been a distance runner… or a runner at all for that matter. More like a run-walker. So it was almost impossible to imagine my body enduring 13.1 miles until I started training.

But I’ve also always been a “perfect conditions” runner… as in a sunny and 75 runner.

So I’ve really surprised myself as I change my definition of perfect conditions from sunny and 75 to 40 degrees and dry. With the help of some warm swag.

With the help and support of Fleet Feet Nashville I’m pacing right along but I need your help adding a little extra meaning to my miles.

I am running as a St. Jude Hero and committing to raising money for the sweet kids in Memphis and all of their affiliate locations.

I’m aiming big and hoping to raise $1,000 between now and race day, which is plus or minus 100 days away. So I’m going to need all the help I can get!

Click here to help by giving what you can!

Thank you you thank you thank you! Okay now it’s time to go get some more miles in.

Eating in Season with Bloomsbury Farms: Strawberry Jam Vinaigrette

Next to picking up my beautiful CSA basket every week, the next best thing are the little Bloomsbury Farms surprises.

This week it was a small carton of farm fresh eggs, which were gone in no time…

File Sep 13, 2 13 01 PM

And strawberry jam!

After a few days of wondering what to do with the jam besides spread it on toast… I decided to make a vinaigrette to toss with kale and make a late summer strawberry salad!

File Sep 12, 11 42 07 AM File Sep 12, 11 45 21 AM

You just need Bloomsbury Farm’s strawberry jam and a little bit of red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper, mustard and sugar. I used lavender vanilla sugar from Savory Spice in Franklin.

File Sep 13, 2 11 53 PM

I tossed it all in a mason jar, put the lid on and did some shaking!

File Sep 13, 2 14 07 PM

With the help of a few strawberries and feta cheese, my jam vinaigrette was the perfect compliment.

Playing Dress Up on the East Side with Kitty Nashville

Kitty Nashville

When I first moved to Nashville I never thought of East Nashville would be in the same breath as one of my favorite shopping destinations. Much has changed in a year.

Welcome to East Nashville’s newest charmer, Kitty!

Kitty Nashville

Owner Sarah Davidson and 1/3 of folk trio The Stella James Band named her newest adventure after the pioneering country singer Kitty Wells.

Like Kitty Wells, Sarah is a “go getter gal” determined not to let anyone tell her she can’t do what she has her heart set on.

Kitty Nashville Kitty Nashville Kitty Nashville

I’ve been wondering how Sarah does it all but having her hands in many different ventures is what the Kitty brand is all about.

Kitty is truly an experience.

Get inspired by the wall of singing babes, have a drink and mellow out to beautiful folk music.

Kitty Nashville Kitty Nashville Kitty Nashville

Once you’re done drooling at the beautiful space Sarah has created… it’s time to shop! Lucky for me Sarah was ready to play dress up!

Kitty Nashville

When I walked in I was immediately drawn to one of her newest two piece sets from For Love and Lemons. The Barcelono crop top and midi skirt duo were sweet, sexy and fit like a glove!

Kitty Nashville Kitty Nashville

Kitty’s For Love and Lemons collection was the gift that kept giving. Next up… the glamorous Vienna Maxi Dress.

And as the temperatures cool down we couldn’t help but put together something for fall.

These kicka$$ boots from Kate Bosworth’s Matisse line though… killer.

It’s always a good time to stop into Kitty! Definitely my new go-to spot to grab something before a night out in Nashville!

A Month with Class Pass

Just 6 months in and Class Pass is killin’ it in Nashville.

CP is a monthly membership to hundreds of fitness classes around town from barre to pilates to circuit training… and it’s only $79 a month! The only catch is you can only go to one studio three times a month.

Made specifically for the indecisive… for those that get locked into a year long contract at a gym and then get bored with the workouts after four months. We have commitment issues. It’s fine.

The gym-like membership app graced us with it’s presence in February and since then has worked with dozens of studios in Nashville and beyond.

August was my first full month with my new membership and here is what a typical week looked like for me.

Day 1 – Noon: Starting my week off strong at Neighborhood Barre in Brentwood.

File Sep 02, 6 38 30 PM

There are dozens of barre studios in town but there’s something different about NB. They’re a fairly new studio and only have a handful of locations. Based out of Chattanooga, they’re focus is just in the south. That’s different then most barre studios that have expanded nationwide.

File Sep 08, 4 45 18 PM File Sep 08, 4 57 11 PM File Sep 08, 5 01 15 PM

You get all the local vibes and all of the one-on-one attention. While barre workouts are essentially the same, everyone does things a little different. So I found myself working a few muscles I didn’t know I had!

Wednesday- 6:00 pm:  Trained with some of the best at Results Fitness on Music Row.

Results Fitness Nashville

The Ultimate Results class was intense but was great for all fitness levels.

The workout uses treadmills, spin bikes, rowers, weights, medicine balls, kettle bells, bands, BOSU Balls, TRX straps and of course your own body weight.

JORB8100 JORB8098 JORB8079

Trainers Josh and LeAnn are awesome motivators that made me feel like I could do anything!

Thursday- 4:30 pm: Getting the hang of the reformers at The Pilates Garage in Hillsboro Village with Kate Curtis.

File Sep 08, 4 35 52 PM

They look a little intimidating but they’re so much fun and the possibilities are endless. I was amazed by the different things Kate could come up with using them.

File Sep 02, 8 32 37 PM File Sep 02, 8 33 58 PM File Sep 02, 8 46 38 PM File Sep 02, 8 31 09 PM

It is an intimate workout with just a few reformers, you really get one-on-one attention. As a former dancer, pilates is probably one of my most important workouts to keep up with what used to be!

Class Pass Nashville

And there ya have it! A typical week for me is about three workouts but I can use it as little or as much as I want. So it’s official… I’m committing to not committing!

30 days of Hydration with Everly

Photo Sep 01, 5 04 47 PM

Raise your hand if you’re chronically dehydrated?

The first thing I think of in the morning is some sort of caffeine… not water.

The first thing I think of when a waiter asks me what I want to drink is sweet tea… not water.

Water is the always the last thing on my list unless I’m in the midst of a long run.

Photo Sep 01, 5 12 35 PM

So in the spirit of getting back on track I am challenging myself to drinking 8 glasses of water a day for 30 days and hopefully the habit will stick long after that.

But I can’t kick my tea habit cold turkey and that’s where my friends at Everly come to the rescue!

Photo Sep 01, 5 09 38 PM

These all natural zero calorie powdered drink mixtures have been a life savior and it’s only day one.

Photo Sep 01, 5 03 12 PM Photo Sep 01, 5 03 49 PM Photo Sep 01, 5 09 02 PM

They have natural flavor, natural color, they’re sugar-free, sweetened with stevia extract, and vitamin enhanced… and if that’s not enough for every time you buy a box they provide life-saving hydration medicines to treat kids sick with waterborne diseases.

Photo Sep 01, 5 01 27 PM

They call it Hydration for Hydration. Beautiful.

I’m pretty notorious for making lofty health and fitness goals but I think I can do it with Everly!

And I’m definitely looking forward to flushing some toxins away while clearing up my skin. And if more water kills these insane migraines and headaches… even better!

Eat Like a Local: Nashville Originals’ Restaurant Week

It’s a weeks worth of special menus and deals at all of my local favorites and it’s twice a year!

It’s the brain child of Nashville Originals, an organization full of local restaurateurs dedicated to sustaining the independent restaurant as a fixture of Nashville’s culture and community.

The August edition forced me out of my comfort zone… taking me to a few spots I hadn’t been before.

Let’s start with breakfast!

File Aug 28, 12 38 35 PM

Fenwick’s 300 in Melrose has been open for almost a year now but I am just now making it there to try… huge mistake!

File Aug 28, 12 40 49 PM

My News 2 photographer pal, Armondo, and I actually went there to “work” on a few live reports one morning… and they threw the book at us! Biscuits and gravy, eggs benedict, strawberry french toast, jalapeno cheddar grits, beignets and one big ole’ pancake.

File Aug 28, 12 39 30 PM File Aug 28, 12 40 25 PM

And those lattes… had to take one to go!

File Aug 28, 12 26 50 PM File Aug 28, 12 56 46 PM

That night I ventured into the house of ramen at Two Ten Jack with the insanely talented Kelsey Cherry.

File Aug 28, 12 09 46 PM

File Aug 28, 12 35 23 PM

We both dove head first into the ramen… mine the tori paitan which included chicken broth, tsukune, greens, chili oil, a soft egg and hon-shimeji.

Hers the yasai shoyu with vegetable broth, burnt corn, greens, benishoga and mayu.

File Aug 28, 12 44 34 PM

So good it makes you want to lick the bowl!

File Aug 28, 12 10 28 PM

It was a long day and we may have had one too many of those sake punches.

The next day was lunch at one of my favorites… Smokin’ Thighs!

File Aug 28, 12 51 45 PM

Personally, I am a huge fan of their juicy jumbo wings but for Restaurant Week they were all about their smoked chicken tacos… which didn’t disappoint!

File Aug 28, 12 27 29 PM

Barbecue applewood smoked chicken topped with a roasted pepper corn lettuce slaw and my favorite ranch! I added on my two favorite sides in Nashville… their loaded baked potato salad and bacon mac-n-cheese.

File Aug 28, 12 37 33 PM

My latest stop for dinner was Cabana… a hidden Hillsboro Village gem.

File Aug 28, 12 26 08 PM

I did their full three course, wine flight Restaurant Week experience with the Blackened Mahi.

File Aug 28, 12 25 03 PM

But it was also 2-for-1 pizza night so… had to.

Get out there Nashville! Only a few more days left of restaurant week… and then it’s back to the clean eats 🙁

Happy Restaurant Week!

Eating in Season with Bloomsbury Farms: Oven Roasted Baby Potatoes

It just keeps getting better and better!

File Aug 24, 1 09 43 PM

This week’s harvest:

pattypan squash

summer squash

sunflower and clover sprouts

and baby potatoes

File Aug 24, 1 06 38 PM

This was an easy one that I kind of created on my own based on what I already had in my pantry and fridge.

File Aug 24, 1 10 56 PM

I started by cutting the potatoes in half and then put them in a bowl and tossed them around with a little bit of rosemary, thyme, onions, salt and parmesan cheese.

File Aug 24, 1 12 22 PM File Aug 24, 1 17 13 PM File Aug 24, 1 53 32 PM File Aug 24, 1 55 02 PM

Threw them in the oven for 30 minutes or so and ta-da!

In just 35 minutes from start to finish I was eating these little potatoes like popcorn!

Road Trip: Leiper’s Fork

A short scenic road trip down the Natchez Trace, Leiper’s Fork is one of my favorite places to just be.

Away from the city… away from the crowds. My perfect lazy day destination.

Paige-0378 Paige-0360 Paige-0321

Whether you’ve come here to do some pickin’ or you’re just here to eat, there are things here you can’t get anywhere else.

Paige-0290 Paige-0285 Paige-0288 Paige-0393 Paige-0413 Paige-0368 Paige-0411 Paige-0319

My favorite part about “The Fork” is the small business owners put what’s most important first… family.

Like Joe’s Naturals was just decided to close up shop until September to take a much needed vacation… I love that! Not many of us city folk would do that!

It’s quality over quantity here on Old Hillsboro Road. Quality time with quality people.

This slow paced, middle of the street walkin kind of life is good for the soul. Until next time!
